The novel The Bluest Eye written by Toni Morrison is subjected on a young girl, Pecola Breedlove and her experiences growing up in a poor black family. The life depicted is one of poverty, ridicule, and dissatisfaction of self. Pecola feels ugly because of her social status as a poor young black girl and longs to have blue eyes, the pinnacle of beauty and worth. Throughout the book, Morrison touches on controversial subjects, such as the depicting of Pecolas father raping her, Mrs. Breedloves sexual feelings toward her husband, and Pecolas menstruation. The books content is controversial on many levels and it has bred conflict among its readers. Parent Anna Agenjo says, I think he has a very narrow point of view. He feels only books that have uncontroversial topics should be taught in the high school district (Hunn A1). Some believe that Vegas standpoint and religious convictions are `narrow-minded and unnecessary in dealing with the issue of book banning. Yet Vegas declares himself he doesnt believe The Bluest Eye should be banned completely from High School reading lists (Vegas). He believes the district should use the Supplemental Literature Selection Form, which is used by teacher to approve books for reading in the classroom. In accordance with the selection form the teacher must specify for what grade level the book will be intended for and must cite any controversial content dealing with offensive language, sexual references and the like before the book can be approved for classroom use (Supplemental Lit.
